Important Types of AI

The term "AI" refers to computer systems designed to mimic human intelligence. These systems can be trained to perform tasks typically requiring human cognition, such as recognizing speech, solving problems, or developing novel ideas. AI can be classified in different ways, but one common distinction is between Narrow AI and more advanced types of AI.

Narrow AI

Performs a single task or a limited range of tasks very well. Narrow AI is also known as traditional AI, and performs tasks based on predetermined algorithms. One example of Narrow AI that you’ve been using for years is the humble spam filter which uses algorithms to analyze patterns in emails and automatically sorts out unwanted messages. More advanced Narrow AIs don’t just analyze data but can create new content by accessing large datasets.

Generative AI

Creates new content such as text, images, or music based on patterns it has learned from existing data. It can be used to assist with tasks like writing, designing, and problem-solving. Generative AI can be a valuable tool for enhancing creativity and productivity.

Predictive AI

Uses advanced machine learning algorithms and historical data to forecast future trends and outcomes. Predictive AI can support decision-making by evaluating the probability and likelihood of particular outcomes based on past information. Organizations can use predictive AI to anticipate customer behavior, forecast market trends, or identify potential system failures before they occur.
