Program Overview

The B.S. in Middle Grades Education equips future educators with the skills to teach students in grades 4–8, leading to initial teacher certification in two content areas—language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies—in Georgia.

This program focuses on adolescent development, educational psychology, curriculum design, assessment, and effective teaching strategies for middle-grade learners. Through yearlong clinical experiences, candidates apply their knowledge in real classrooms, ensuring they are prepared to make a meaningful impact on student learning.

Program of Study

The program consists of 120 credit hours, including 42 hours of Professional Education courses and 60 hours of General Education coursework. Candidates select two content areas of focus, designating one as their primary area and the other as secondary:

  • Language Arts Education
  • Mathematics Education
  • Science Education
  • Social Studies Education

  • Email your questions to the B.S. in Middles Grades Education Program Coordinator at mgesmge@kennesaw.edu.

  • Education majors are advised in the Teacher Education Advisement Center (TEAC), which is housed in Education Student Services in Kennesaw Hall 1314. You may call Education Student Services at 470.578.6105 or email at BCOE_advising@kennesaw.edu.

  • Candidates can schedule advisement appointments online. Simply select "Education Student Services" from the "Academic Advising" column.
  • Candidates who have completed less than 30 credit hours must meet with their advisor each semester to have the advisement hold removed before registering for courses for the next semester. Candidates are also required to meet with their advisor before submitting their applications for admission to the B.S. in Middle Grades Education Program and to the Yearlong Clinical Experience. Even when not required, it's a good idea to meet with an advisor, at least, once each semester to discuss course prerequisites, scheduling for the next semester, upcoming deadlines, and possible program changes.

  • All courses for the B.S. in Middle Grades Education program are listed in the undergraduate catalog. Courses that require a field experience or practicum indicate this in their course description.
  • The Yearlong Clinical Experience is an intensive and extensive co-teaching yearlong clinical practice in education. Under the guidance of a collaborating teacher and university supervisor and working in a diverse environment that includes students with exceptionalities and English learners, candidates practice professional competencies that impact student achievement. Candidates remain in their clinical field placement for both fall and spring semesters.
  • No. The Yearlong Clinical Experience cannot be completed during a summer semester. Yearlong Clinical Experience I courses are offered only in the fall semester, and Yearlong Clinical Experience II courses are offered only in the spring semester

Yearlong Clinical Experience in Middle Grades Education

What is The Yearlong Clinical Experience?

The Yearlong Clinical Experience is an intensive and extensive co-teaching yearlong clinical practice in education. Under the guidance of a collaborating teacher and university supervisor and working in a diverse environment that includes students with exceptionalities and English learners, candidates practice professional competencies that impact student achievement. Candidates remain in their clinical field placement for both fall and spring semesters.

During the fall semester, candidates take two methods courses, one for each of their chosen content area concentrations, in which they learn to use their knowledge of young adolescent learners to plan and implement effective instructional and assessment strategies in the middle school setting. Please refer to the current KSU Undergraduate Catalog for a complete listing of the Program of Study, including the specific coursework required for each teaching field concentration.

Applying for Yearlong Clinical Experience

The Yearlong Clinical Experience always begins in the fall semester. Therefore, candidates may only apply for the Yearlong Clinical Experience in the previous spring semester. Candidates should contact their advisor in Education Student Services before they plan to register for Yearlong Clinical Experience I for information on applications and deadlines.

Admission to Yearlong Clinical Experience

Candidates must have a 2.75 GPA by the semester in which they want enter the Yearlong Clinical Experience I. This GPA must be maintained to progress to Yearlong Clinical Experience II. Pre-requisites for admission to Yearlong Clinical Experience I are admission to the Teacher Education program and possession of a pre-service certification.

Placements

All placements are arranged through a collaboration with Office of Clinical Experiences, Placements and Partnerships (CEPP) and the Department of Secondary & Middle Grades Education. Candidate negotiation of placements is strictly prohibited. The Middle Grades Clinical Experience Supervisor will notify candidates of their school placements at the beginning of the semester.
