Department Overview
The Department of Secondary & Middle Grades Education focuses on the development of
teachers in English/language arts, mathematics, reading, the sciences, and social
studies for the middle grades (4-8) and in mathematics and the sciences for the secondary
grades (6-12). We also collaboratively offer an endorsement in Reading with the Department
of Elementary and Early Childhood Education. Our department includes faculty with
academic expertise in curriculum and instruction and in the core areas of the school
curriculum (English/language arts, mathematics, the sciences, and social studies),
as well as foundational areas, including educational psychology, educational research,
instructional technology, and inclusive education. |

We prepare teachers at all career stages to meet students’ intellectual and social-emotional needs in developmentally appropriate ways. Our department is nationally recognized for work in Curriculum and Instruction; Middle Grades and Secondary Education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We have the largest doctoral enrollment in Bagwell.
