Program Overview


The Masters of Arts in Teaching in Secondary English program leads to a Master's degree and a teaching certificate in Secondary English (grades 6-12). The program is currently 15-18 months in length and enrolls in both spring (January) and summer (June) semesters.

Program of Study

The program comprises 36 total hours, including at least 9 hours of professional sequence courses and 27 hours of teaching field courses. The program is designed to be flexible enough to support students interested in a longer program of study.

Applicants without a bachelor's degree (or background coursework in) English or a closely related field may need to complete prerequisite coursework in order to be eligible for admission to the Secondary English concentration of the MAT program. Prerequisite categories and potential courses are detailed in the prerequisite approval form; please contact the program advisor for more information and guidance.

Admissions Requirements

Must possess the following beyond the general KSU Graduate College Admission Requirements: ·

  • Degree – Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field from an accredited institution or completion of 18 prerequisite hours that demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in English.
  • Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment – Uploaded to graduate application. Information may be found on the GACE Ethics website. You may print a copy of your completion certification from the GACE Ethics test taker website.
  • Professional Resume – Uploaded to graduate application. Should document education, any teaching experience, volunteer and service accomplishments, and record of leadership activities.

  • For more information regarding the MAT in Secondary English, please contact Dr. Darren Crovitz, the Program Coordinator, at dcrovitz@kennesaw.edu.
  • Review of applications takes several weeks and begins after the application deadline has been reached. You will receive an email from the graduate school notifying you of your acceptance. In that email you will also receive information about proving your US citizenship, orientation detail and registration instructions. After this, a formal letter will be sent to your home address detailing your acceptance as well.
  • You are able to transfer up to 9 credit hours of course work based upon review and approval by the program coordinator. This coursework cannot be older than 5 years.
  • To determine if you are eligible for financial aid, please visit Graduate Admissions for information relating to options available for graduate students.
  • Based on the program of study, completion will take candidates four or five semesters (including summer), depending on the date of enrollment.
  • Each semester will require you to enroll in either two or three courses depending on how far along you are within the program of study.
