Program Description

The Dyslexia Certificate is offered through the Bagwell College of Education Inclusive Education Department. The Dyslexia Certificate leads to a GaPSC endorsement for certified educators in Georgia and is designed to prepare candidates to identify the characteristics of dyslexia and support students with dyslexia in the educational setting.

The Dyslexia Certificate is offered as a three-course sequence. Applicants can apply directly to the Dyslexia Certificate or take courses as electives through an advanced degree program (e.g., M.Ed.; Ed.S; Ed.D.). The Dyslexia Certificate is embedded in the M.A.T Special Education program. Students in this fully online graduate program will take 9 credit hours. Courses are offered on a rotating basis. Students may begin the sequence in either Summer or Fall semester. 

You must have a valid, clear, renewable teaching certificate to be eligible for this endorsement in Georgia. A teaching certificate is valid only in the state for which it is issued.

Program of Study

  • INED 7611: Introduction to Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities in the Context of Literacy
    This course covers the characteristics of individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Students will gain an understanding of neurological functions in individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities and the impact on reading and writing. Historical perspectives and contemporary issues surrounding dyslexia and related disabilities will also be addressed. 
  • INED 7621: Assessment for Learners with Dyslexia 
    This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills about assessment theories and practices utilized in making eligibility and instructional decisions for students with dyslexia. Candidates develop an understanding of assessment terminology, progress monitoring, and data-based intervention decision-making. Candidates will gain expertise in communicating and collaborating with key stakeholders in the assessment process including students, families, and colleagues. Field experience is required. 
  • INED 7631: Evidence-Based Instruction/Intervention for Learners with Dyslexia 
    The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge about evidence-based instruction and intervention methods related to literacy instruction for students with reading disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, language-based learning disabilities). Emphasis is on applying an understanding of the English language and reading development to promote positive academic outcomes for students with dyslexia. Candidates will use knowledge of Common Core Curriculum Standards, the learner and learner context, and the reading instructional cycle to prepare for the delivery of evidence-based instructional practices for students with dyslexia. 

TOTAL CREDITS – 9 hours  
 3 courses - 3 semesters - Summer/Fall/Spring or Fall/Spring/Summer

  3. Official transcripts from each college or university attended. If the institution is outside the U.S., an international credential evaluation will be required.
  4. Bachelor's degree from a Regionally Accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.75
  5. Must hold a clear, renewable Georgia Teaching Certificate
  6. Additional requirements by program 

Deadline
