Past Summer Fellows Application Steps

The application period for the Summer Research Fellows program is closed! This program supports faculty in developing competitive external grant proposals. Priority is given to new tenured or tenure-track faculty with less than three years at KSU. Participants engage in a summer grant writing boot camp and receive ongoing support throughout the year. A mini-workshop is available for those needing extra preparation. Selected Fellows receive compensation and submitted a completed grant proposal in Fall of 2021 and an external grant proposal within the 2021-2022 academic year.

For future information, please contact researchdev@kennesaw.edu.

  • The overall purpose of the Summer Research Fellows program is to provide a select group of faculty with additional information, resources and support to develop a competitive external grant proposal.  Faculty must already have a specific research idea in place (including any necessary publications, pilot data, preliminary findings and/or partnerships) in addition to having already identified an appropriate funding mechanism.  While prior grant writing experience is not required, it is helpful as this is a fast-paced program.  Being selected as a Summer Research Fellow is a competitive process, and only those faculty with high chances for success at external funding will be considered.
  • Full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty; however, priority will be given to new faculty who have been at KSU for three years or less.  Faculty can only participate in the Summer Research Fellows program one time.
  • Once the pre-applications have been carefully reviewed by the Office of Research staff, competitive applicants will be contacted for a brief interview to gather more details about their research and external funding past history and future plans.  Department chairs and Deans may also be consulted about faculty applications.  Final decisions will be made by the beginning of March.

For those applicants who are not quite ready for the full Summer Research Fellows program, a second group may be selected to participate in a “mini workshop” spanning two weeks over the summer which will include two synchronous workshop sessions and a self-paced D2L course.  A small summer stipend will be available to these participants.  The goal of this “mini-workshop” is the provide faculty with additional information and resources to increase their competitiveness for next year’s Summer Research Fellows Program.

  • The Summer Research Fellows program is a full year commitment.  Summer Research Fellows must participate in a summer grant writing boot camp which will meet (virtually and/or face-to-face depending on the COVID-19 situation) twice a week for two hours per session between June 1, 2021 and July 2, 2021.  Exact dates and times will be determined based on participants’ availability.  Additionally, we will set up self-guided D2L course that must also be completed.  Summer Research Fellows will also be expected to participate in smaller writing accountability groups based on needs and availability throughout the grant writing process.

A completed draft of the grant proposal must be submitted by Fall 2021.   A final external grant proposal must be submitted during the 2021-2022 academic year.  Periodic check ins and progress reports will also take place.  Progress and outcomes will be shared with Deans and Chairs.

In order to ensure dedicated time for grant writing, Summer Research Fellows will be compensated up to 10% of their salary for summer salary to be paid in June 2021.
