CSE 1321/L and CSE 1322/L Course Registration

CSE 1321/L and CSE 1322/L Programming & Problem Solving I and II are split into a 3-credit lectures (CSE 1321 Prog. 1, CSE 1322 Prog. 2) and 1-credit labs (CSE 1321L, CSE 1322L) and you need to take the lecture and corresponding lab at the same time (unless you've tried them before and need to repeat one, or you have transfer credit).

Which courses should you register for?

CSE 1321 (Programming Problem Solving I) and CSE 1321L (Program Problem Solving I Lab).

  • Also written as CSE 1321/L.
  • Programming Language: All labs for CSE 1321L are taught in Python.

CSE 1322 (Programming Problem Solving II) and CSE 1322L (Program Problem Solving II Lab)

  • Also written as CSE 1322/L.
  • Programming Languages: All labs for CSE 1322L are taught in both Java and C#.
  • You must add your sections of the lecture and lab to your 'Summary' box at the same time.
They are prerequisites for each other, so you cannot register for one course at a time.

Again, do not attempt to register for the lecture by itself with the intention of registering for the lab afterward.
You will get a Prerequisite & Test Score error.

Also, you must find a lecture and lab pair that both have open seats.
Or you must find a lecture and lab pair for which you can join the waitlist for both sections.
The sections must have the same status.
Status refers to whether a section is 'open' or 'full/waitlisting.'
If the sections have a different status, then you will receive a Prerequisite & Test Score error.

  • The lecture and lab for both CSE 1321/L and CSE 1322/L are concurrent prerequisites of each other. That means you must register for a section of the lecture and a section of the lab simultaneously. Sometimes, an error with one section will cause a secondary (Prerequisite and Test Score) error with the other section.

    • Prerequisite and Test Score error
      • (Specific to CSE 1322/L) Have you taken MATH 1113, MATH 1190, MATH 2202, or are you registered to take one of those courses this semester? If not, you need to be registered for one of those MATH courses before registering for the Programming II lecture & lab.
      • Are you trying to register for both the lecture and the lab simultaneously? If you are trying to register for the lecture and lab in separate transactions, then it will not work. You must add your sections of the lecture and lab to your 'Summary' box at the same time.
      • Are you trying to register for an online section of the lecture and/or lab? Certain sections are reserved for students designated as 100% online learners. If you are not an online learner, talk to a CCSE Academic Advisor to discuss your options.
      • Check to see if either the lecture or the lab section you are trying to register for are full and only have waitlist capacity. If this is the case, try to find a different section that does not have a waitlist. You must find a lecture and lab pair that both have open seats. Or you must find a lecture and lab pair for which you can join the waitlist for both sections. The sections must have the same status. Status refers to whether a section is 'open' or 'full/waitlisting.' If the sections have a different status, then you will receive a Prerequisite & Test Score error.
      • Check to see if either the lecture or the lab section you are trying to register for has a time conflict with a course already on your schedule.
    • Campus Restriction error
      • Traditional/Hybrid Students
        • That section has a restriction that blocks traditional (in-person) students from registering. Some online sections of certain classes are reserved for 100% Online Learners only. You will need to find another online section of the course that does not have that restriction and then see if seats are still available.
          • You can view the restrictions on a course by going to the 'Registration' tab within Owl Express and clicking the 'Register for Classes' link. After you look up the course, click on the 'Title' of the course that is underlined in gray letters to view more information in a pop-up window. Click on 'Restrictions' to see if there are any restrictions for that section.
      • 100% Online Students
        • That section has a restriction that blocks online learners from registering because it requires in-person meetings. Some sections are reserved for traditional students only. You will need to find a 100% online section of the course and then see if seats are still available.
    • Closed - Waitlist Available error
      • Either the lecture or lab you tried to register for are full. You will need to find a different section or join waitlists. You can follow the registration directions listed above to join the waitlists for a lecture and lab. If you are offered a seat only for either the lecture or lab, but not the other, then pair that seat with a different lecture/lab with open seats. If you need assistance with this process, then please speak to a CCSE Academic Advisor.
    • Repeat count exceeds 1 error
    • Student Attribute error
      • You may be attempting to register for an Honors section. Honors sections will have an 'H' in the section code. Also, Honors sections will have 'HON' in the course title (for example: 'Program Problem Solving I HON' and 'Program Problem Solving I Lab HON').
        • If so, then that section has a restriction that only allows students in the Honors program to register for it. You will need to find another section of the course that does not have that restriction and then see if seats are still available.
          • You can view the attribute restrictions on a course by going to the 'Registration' tab within Owl Express and clicking the 'Register for Classes' link. After you look up the course, click on the 'Title' of the course that is underlined in gray letters to view more information in a pop-up window. Click on 'Restrictions' to see if there are any restrictions for that section.
