KSU nursing grad ready for new adventures after a 'hectic' final year

A tumultuous school year will end in triumph for Cheyenne Murphy. The nursing major dealt with a global pandemic and all the resulting consequences—a postponed wedding, online classes, ground-zero work experience and the death of her grandmother because of COVID-19—and has emerged one of the latest graduates of Kennesaw State University.

Grant for KSU academy will help create job opportunities

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion has been awarded a grant from the Administration for Community Living which will allow Kennesaw State’s Academy for Inclusive Learning and Social Growth to create more work opportunities within the university for individuals with disabilities.

Anthropologist, sport scientist join forces for bone health study

One professor studies the bones of the deceased, the other studies the bones of the living. They will combine their expertise on a study about how exercise fosters bone health. Alice Gooding, associate professor of anthropology at Kennesaw State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences and an avid runner, and Yuri Feito, associate professor of exercise science in KSU’s Wellstar College of Health and Human Services, met last year during a new summer research fellowship program in KSU’s Office of Research.

Donor builds relationship with KSU

Having started his own business at 21 years old, Kennesaw State Foundation trustee Dave Walens understands the importance of hard work and determination. “Entrepreneurship is close to my heart,” he said. “It’s been my life.” Walens has built a successful career, running businesses in the exhibit and event industry for more than 30 years. As CEO and president of Exploring, Inc., Walens oversees a 150,000-square-foot fabrication facility and a team of metal fabricators, sculptors, artists, carpenters, painters and printers.

KSU's graduate enrollment increases for summer term

Summer enrollment for graduate students at Kennesaw State University increased more than 14 percent over last year, of which 6 percent are newly admitted and 24 percent are returning graduate students, according to data from the Graduate College. This increase represents the third consecutive year that enrollment in KSU’s graduate programs have grown. Over the past three years, including fall, spring and summer semesters, the University has experienced an average increase of 9 percent in graduate enrollment.

Nursing Professor Studies Stress, Anxiety and Trauma of Surgery

Doreen Wagner has more than 35 years of experience in the health care field, ranging from perioperative staff nurse to patient safety system coordinator in the acute care setting. Now as professor of nursing in KSU’s Wellstar School of Nursing, she is most interested in researching the science of nursing.

KSU donor endows scholarships to help those who help others

Retired businessman Mike Hammond is showing his appreciation for the nursing profession, and Kennesaw State University students are the beneficiaries. Hammond is providing financial aid to students enrolled in both the Wellstar School of Nursing and KSU Journey Honors College, through the Henry Michael Hammond Scholarship Endowment that was established at the end of last year. The Forsyth County resident was inspired to donate to a university with a nursing school as a thank-you for the exceptional care he received from nurses – a number of whom were Kennesaw State graduates – while being treated for health issues.

Engineering professors collaborate with Wellstar to decontaminate N95 respirator masks

Faced with a shortage of N95 respirator masks used heavily by healthcare professionals amidst the coronavirus pandemic, a team of Kennesaw State University engineers assisted Wellstar Health System nurse leaders, operations, facility engineering, sterile processing and a project manager in developing an operational plan for their newly built UVGI room to decontaminate masks for reuse.

KSU researcher publishes study on flexible children's prosthetics

Adults with prosthetic legs live full lives thanks to prostheses that flex at the knee. Children, however, have traditionally received stiff prostheses with no knee bend because conventional wisdom promoted that stiff legs were better at developing neuromuscular stability. According to Mark Geil, chair of KSU’s Department of Exercise Science and Sport Management and a professor of exercise science in the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services, children walking with what he called an “Early Knee” prosthetic prescription had increased pace and step length over the “Traditional-Knee” prosthetics prescription, which are prescribed more often for children who experience limb loss.

For the third consecutive year, Kennesaw State is a leading choice for students, according to data from U.S. News & World Report. The U.S. News study determined that Kennesaw State has one of the nation’s highest admissions yield rates, meaning the percentage of admitted students who enroll.
