Two Kennesaw State professors recognized for impacting Georgia's engineering community
Two Kennesaw State University professors were named to Engineering Georgia magazine’s 100 Influential Women to Know list this month, recognizing their character, integrity and purpose within the state’s engineering community.
Kathryn Bedette, an associate professor of architecture, and Nancy Turner, a senior lecturer of civil engineering, were selected by a panel seeking out women who are “influencing the design, growth and success of their communities, businesses and projects.”
An award-winning architect, Bedette coordinates the history and theory course sequence and second-year architecture studios in Kennesaw State’s Department of Architecture.
Building on her professional experience, Bedette’s teaching focuses on the cultivation of a rich and meaningful built environment by foregrounding interrelationships between architecture technologies, program and conceptual design. She began teaching full time at the University in 2006.
Serving as the department’s academic engagement coordinator, Bedette facilitates relationships and collaborations between the architecture department and the greater community. She is the current president of the American Institute of Architects Georgia chapter and mentors graduates as the Architect Licensing Advisor for Georgia. Her work and scholarship have been exhibited in multiple venues and presented internationally in Istanbul, Trabzon, Bari and Amsterdam.
An educator for more than 27 years, Turner joined the Civil Engineering Technology department at the former Southern College of Technology, now Kennesaw State, in 1987 and also taught in the construction and architecture departments.
She has been instrumental in developing and adapting academic engineering courses in the University’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, and has created more than 20 laboratory experiments and exercises. Turner has also assisted various engineering departments in preparing for ABET accreditation visits.
Currently in the Civil & Construction Engineering department, she serves as faculty advisor for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter, and oversees the competition teams within the chapter.
She was named 2017 Georgia Engineer of the Year in Education by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers for making outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, public welfare and humankind.
