MAPWriting features works by and about students, alumni and faculty
As it marks the passage of 20 years of producing writers working in all genres of the profession, the Master of Professional Writing Program at Kennesaw State University has launched its first video magazine titled MAPWriting.
The video magazine, produced and distributed through the Digital Commons platform, features articles and videotaped interviews by and about alumni, students, faculty and events in the MAPW community.
Among the 11 featured article in the current spring 2017 edition, Professor Emeritus Bob Barrier recounts the founding of the MAPW program, and Arthur Harris, the University's oldest alumnus and a MAPW graduate, is profiled in an extended video interview. Each edition will also highlight publications by alumni and faculty and provide resources for writers.
“The MAPW has two decades of excellence in teaching and writing,” said Tony Grooms, the program’s interim director and senior editor for the magazine. “The magazine is designed to showcase the works and achievements of MAPW’s award-winning faculty, and its accomplished students and alumni. They are published poets, novelists and writers of creative non-fiction; they’re working as communications specialists for businesses and nonprofits, they’re editing magazines, teaching in Ph.D. and master’s programs and in high schools, working in new media.”
It’s that sense of accomplishment and community that the magazine seeks to reflect, according to Estefany Palacio, an MAPW student who serves as managing editor.
“MAPWriting is what we hope to be a step toward creating more conversations within our community of writers, both at KSU and beyond,” Palacio wrote in the premiere edition. “This will be a space where alumni, faculty, and students will share their stories and where students and others interested in pursuing a degree in professional writing will learn of opportunities in the field. … The alumni that will be featured … have taken the time to share their knowledge and experiences.”
