MARIETTA, Ga. | Mar 15, 2017
Kennesaw State University’s new 450-seat dance theater on its Marietta campus will hold its first performance on March 24.
The theater is the southeast region’s first theater specifically designed for dance, according to university officials. KSU’s Dance Company will perform in the theater, located in the Joe Mack Wilson Student Center on KSU’s Marietta campus.
The original theater was built in 1962.
The new theater comes equipped with dance flooring and state-of-the-art theatrical
lighting and audio systems.
KSU President Sam Olens said the new dance theater adds another dimension of artistic programming to the university and metro Atlanta.
“Kennesaw State’s multifaceted arts and culture programs not only enhance and enrich our campus community, they contribute substantially to our vibrant regional culture,” he said.
The new theater took six months to renovate, including bringing the stage closer to the audience and extending its depth.
The premiere of a new work by Ivan Pulinkala, the founding director of KSU’s dance department, called “Metamorphosis,” is scheduled to open the theater on March 24. The 45-minute piece will feature 19 dancers from the KSU Dance Company.
The facility will host student organizations and university functions and will serve
as a rental performance venue.
