University research to satisfy demands for big data
Kennesaw State University has launched an Analytics and Data Science Institute to facilitate and support advanced study and research in the area of data science and advanced analytics. The Institute will provide training and graduate study that is responsive to current societal needs.
The new Institute, which will house Kennesaw State’s Ph.D. in Analytics and Data Science, will also include multiple research labs in collaboration with partners like Equifax and GE Power. It will occupy a newly designed, 10,000 square foot space in the University’s Town Point building in Kennesaw.
“Our students face a world in which societal needs and career options are ever-expanding,” said Kennesaw State President Sam Olens. “This Institute presents an opportunity to keep Kennesaw State at the cutting edge of knowledge in the critical and rapidly changing data and analytics fields.”
Recently recognized as one of the top graduate programs in the country for the study of data science, Kennesaw State also offers a graduate certificate in Data Management and Analytics, designed for IT professionals who have a bachelor’s degree in a computing field.
“This is a significant milestone for Kennesaw State University,” said Mike Dishman, dean of the Graduate College. “The Analytics and Data Science Institute represents a rich, interdisciplinary approach to applied research at Kennesaw State, incorporating graduate faculty and students from each of the 13 colleges on campus.”
Dishman noted that the Institute’s collaborative research labs will provide students the opportunity to work with renowned companies in order to gain real-world experiences, while also providing them the opportunity to build professional connections and gain academic credit.
Kennesaw State joins other prominent research universities that have recently launched interdisciplinary data science institutes.
“Interdisciplinary programs that collaborate with external partners in the private and public sectors represent a 21st century approach to graduate education,” said Jennifer Lewis Priestley, associate dean of the Graduate College and director of the new Institute.
