Researcher to discuss properties of plant growth

Kennesaw State University’s Office of Research is hosting a one-hour web show every other Friday at 4 p.m. to showcase the varied research being conducted by KSU faculty members. “Research with Relevance” spotlights Kennesaw State researchers in a live interview followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with the virtual audience. In this week’s episode, Mario Bretfeld, assistant professor of biology in the College of Science and Mathematics, will discuss his research on the thermo-biological properties of organic and conventional tomatoes grown at the KSU Field Station. Before the presentation, Bretfeld answered a few questions about his interest in research and the ways in which he involves students.

Star student overcomes homelessness to excel

To say Kennesaw State senior Carrie Lyn Barron has a lot of irons in the fire is an understatement. Among those who know her, the most popular observation is “I don’t know how she does it.” Barron, a non-traditional cellular, molecular and developmental biology major and student in KSU Journey Honors College, works in the lab of professor of biochemistry Jonathan McMurry, works two jobs and cares for her husband, Jay, who has autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). With support from Kennesaw State’s Campus Awareness, Resource and Empowerment (CARE) Services, the couple now have a stable place to live.

Kennesaw State, UT program to offer research experience to ROTC students

Kennesaw State University and the University of Tennessee (UT), in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research, will launch a unique program training a cohort of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) students at each institution in cybersecurity, data analytics and advance manufacturing.

More than 3,500 spring graduates earn degrees from Kennesaw State

Their official ceremony may be postponed, but more than 3,500 Kennesaw State University students are graduating this week. The May 2020 class of 3,512 graduate candidates – 2,893 undergraduate and 619 graduate students – marks an increase from last spring’s 3,400 graduates. The students are earning their degrees and receiving their diplomas after KSU transitioned to fully remote learning midway through the semester because of the coronavirus outbreak, which also caused the May Commencement ceremonies to be postponed.

Students share research via Virtual Symposium

The 24th annual Symposium of Student Scholars, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research, was held virtually for the first time as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that students would not miss out on valuable experiential learning opportunities. The event is held each year to give undergraduate and graduate researchers from all disciplines at Kennesaw State University the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience.

Renowned cellular biology researcher named dean for College of Science and Mathematics

Kennesaw State University President Pamela Whitten and Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kathy Schwaig have named Kojo Mensa-Wilmot as dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. He will start in his new role on August 1.

Kennesaw State Researcher Wins Petroleum Grant
December 12, 2019
Altug Poyraz, an assistant professor of inorganic chemistry at Kennesaw State University, has been awarded an American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) grant for research on petroleum coke, a carbon-rich solid fuel produced during the oil refining process.
