Kennesaw State researchers developing AI-powered drones to protect peanut farms from wildlife
June 20, 2025
Feral hogs in Georgia cause an estimated $150 million in agricultural damage each year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To address this growing threat, Kennesaw State University researchers are launching an AI-powered drone system to autonomously protect peanut fields from nighttime wildlife intrusion and reduce costly crop losses. Supported by a $25,000 Georgia Peanut Commission grant, the one-year Night Owl project is a collaboration between Kennesaw State assistant professors Taeyeong Choi and Yan Fang, and University of Georgia agricultural economist Ford Ramsey.

Kennesaw State professor uses speed, crash data to better understand how to protect school children
June 04, 2025
A Kennesaw State University professor is studying whether school zones in Georgia are made safer through automated speed enforcement. Sunanda Dissanayake, professor of civil engineering, is gathering data on determining the effectiveness of automated speed enforcement near schools, then analyzing that data to offer recommendations that help to create guidelines for local governments and transportation authorities.

Kennesaw State architecture, engineering students reimagine Asheville's devastated River Arts District
April 14, 2025
Seeking refuge in Savannah, Georgia, Caelyn Summers sat anxiously in her childhood home last September while Hurricane Helene rumbled across the state before turning north toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of the deadliest storms in two decades, the Category 4 hurricane killed more than 200 people and left Summers without power for nearly four days. Among the images that stood out the most were those of Asheville, North Carolina, where she spent many family vacations over the years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she leapt at the opportunity to be one of about two dozen KSU students to make the four-hour drive to Asheville in January to survey Helene damage and meet with community members to discuss recovery efforts.
