The halls of Kennesaw State University’s Carmichael Student Center were alive with the pounding of drums, chants and claps as master drummer Massamba Diop introduced the music of Senegal to students, faculty and staff.

Kennesaw State student Emma Hunt has qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She earned a silver medal in the speed climbing world championship in Bern, Switzerland.

As music thumped and students mingled on the Campus Green on Sunday, Kennesaw State University freshman Weilly Cabrera of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, surveyed the scene at SplashBash. Lines formed for the waterslide and rides on an inflatable shark, while a football and multiple frisbees flew nearby. It was just what 8,000 new students needed to kick off their college careers.

While some of the 6,000 students who live on campus were moving into residence halls Thursday morning, Kennesaw State University’s faculty and staff gathered in the Convocation Center to focus on the success of all the 44,000 students starting Fall semester on Monday.

Kennesaw State University had an economic impact of $2.03 billion on Georgia in fiscal year 2022, according to a University System of Georgia (USG) report released Tuesday. Kennesaw State’s economic impact in FY 2022 marked an 10.3% increase from $1.84 billion the previous year, while the University System of Georgia’s economic impact grew by 4.14% over fiscal year 2021.

Luke Hardaway had always loved the outdoors, but he found his happy place when he joined a community of nature lovers at Kennesaw State University. Hardaway joined Nature Bound, an outdoor recreation program offered to students through the Department of Sports and Recreation and Outdoor Adventures, in 2022 and said it provided him a close-knit community of people with similar interests within his college community. He’s gone on to serve as a guide on whitewater kayak trips for the program, as well as for whitewater rafting trips with area businesses.

The awe was evident in his voice as Kennesaw State University student Yemi Agesin described his meeting with Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook. “He likes baseball like I do,” Agesin said. “Plus, he was wearing shoes with Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 on them, and the Atlanta Braves are his favorite team. Isn’t that cool?”
