Kennesaw State University President Sam Olens recognized more than three dozen individuals Thursday during Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony at which the Kennesaw State University Foundation awarded more than $141,000.

The Honorable LaDoris “Dot” Harris, the former director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy and a Southern Polytechnic State University alumna, will address more than 2,000 graduates at Kennesaw State University’s summer Commencement, beginning Friday, July 28, at 10 a.m. Other speakers include Teresa M. Joyce, professor emeritus of management, and Mark R. Anderson, the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. Kennesaw State President Samuel S. Olens will preside over the three graduation ceremonies in the KSU Convocation Center on the Kennesaw Campus.

A Kennesaw State alumnus has been named a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship Program for 2017. Valerie Washington, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in systems and industrial engineering from the University’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology in May, was one of 2,000 fellowship awardees honored this year.

More than 3,200 students will graduate during Kennesaw State University’s spring Commencement. Among the speakers who will deliver addresses are the first black female Air Force general, an internationally recognized entrepreneur, and a high school dropout who became a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and will graduate from medical school this month. Kennesaw State President Samuel S. Olens will preside over the five graduation ceremonies in the KSU Convocation Center on the Kennesaw Campus, beginning Tuesday, May 9, at 10 a.m.

A trio of Kennesaw State University professors are recipients of Improving Teacher Quality grants to fund summer workshops for Cobb County high school math teachers. The goal of the program is to provide training and ongoing support for teachers at some of the county’s highest need schools.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Kennesaw State University neuroscientist Martin Hudson $378,561 to research how neuron shape affects function and behavior in the nervous system.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $358,803 to Kennesaw State University developmental biologist Marcus C. Davis for research that ultimately could lead to eradicating limb birth defects and allowing humans to regrow limbs.

Nine Kennesaw State students were honored recently for their outstanding research at the STEM Innovators Conference in Savannah. The students are Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation (LSAMP) Scholars.
