Nominate a Staff Member for Award

These awards will be presented in May 2025 as part of our Spring Coles Faculty and Staff Meeting.

The Coles College of Business Staff Awards Program promotes and rewards outstanding contributions by staff members in the college. Read below to learn the details of each award.

The five award categories are:

Eligibility and Awards

  • Only full time permanent Coles College staff members in non-faculty positions are eligible.
  • Nominees must have completed at least two years of service as a staff member in the Coles College. (As of January 1, 2025)
  • 2024 Staff Award committee members may not be nominated or nominate individuals.
  • Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged.
  • Once a staff member has received an award, he or she will not be eligible to receive the same award from Coles College for five years.

All Award Winners will Receive

  • $1,000 for category awards or $1,500 for the overall award (Please note bonus/awards are considered supplemental wages per the IRS and therefore are taxable.)
  • An engraved award presented by the Dean
  • An announcement in the Coles College Newsletter
  • A seat on the Staff Awards Committee for the 2025 awards

Nomination Process

Nominations may come from individuals themselves, supervisors, subordinates, peers, faculty, and staff. The 2024 Staff Awards Committee, a cross-functional team, reviews nominations and selects winners. An award may not be given in more than one category if the nominations do not provide sufficient justification of meritorious performance.

Innovation and Impact

This award recognizes a staff member who used creativity appropriately to develop new or improved processes, methods, systems, products, or services and encouraged others to do the same. Nominees in this category have made innovation a priority and participated in reasonable and calculated risk- taking that had a positive impact in/for Coles College.

Criteria

Nominated individuals should demonstrate a combination of the following and examples must be provided in the submitted nomination:

  • Identifies creative solutions that make a significant and positive impact
  • Considers situations and problems from novel and diverse perspectives
  • Considers constraints that limit innovation; works within constraints to create novel approaches
  • Finds ways to make the most out of existing resources
  • Encourages people to think of alternative ways of doing things
  • Views ideas and suggestions from a pragmatic, user-oriented perspective; effectively determines if ideas would work in operation and result in impact

Service, Dedication & Commitment

This award recognizes a staff member who has demonstrated superior commitment to the mission, vision and values of Coles College of Business. Nominees in this category demonstrate a passion for exceeding expectations of students, colleagues, alumni, and business community partners. This award recognizes an individual that is proactive, responsive and approachable in all interactions and relationships both within the Coles College and externally with members of the University and business communities.

Criteria

Nominated individuals should demonstrate a combination of the following and examples must be provided in the submitted nomination:

  • Consistently strives to exceed expectations, performs more than what is minimally required
  • Anticipates needs and proactively seeks solutions
  • Responds to changing needs and fosters a solutions-oriented environment
  • Regularly delivers on commitments
  • Persists until the priority is addressed and the commitment is successfully met
  • Shares knowledge and contributes beyond her/his own unit
  • Serves as a reference to others

Spirit of Coles

This award recognizes a staff member who has demonstrated consistent dedication, cooperation and exceptional customer service to those he or she supports and with whom he or she interacts. Nominees in this category regularly exhibit a positive attitude and an infectious energy and are willing to go above and beyond in order to make each interaction and project a success.

Criteria

Nominated individuals should demonstrate a combination of the following and examples must be provided in the submitted nomination:

  • Approaches work with enthusiasm and passion
  • Exhibits a contagious positive attitude in every encounter
  • Shows initiative and motivation in tasks, projects and activities
  • Presents a positive image to all public
  • Maintains a ‘can-do’ attitude and volunteers for assignments
  • Demonstrates a passion for making a difference by sharing his or her spirit and knowledge with others
  • Significantly contributes to an environment where all members of the community feel valued

Teamwork and Leadership

This award recognizes a staff member who offers their unique knowledge and abilities to promote collaboration, communication, support and cohesion within his or her team or unit. Through positive influence, nominees in this category guide and direct others to enhance the overall performance of the team or unit. Leadership is often exemplified by calculated risk-taking, difficult decision-making and inspirational commitment.

Criteria

Nominated individuals should demonstrate a combination of the following and examples must be provided in the submitted nomination:

  • Fosters open and honest communication
  • Exhibits the talent of coordination and project management
  • Understands how to balance team members’ contributions
  • Provide mutual support and encouragement to others
  • Positively impacts projects through individual effort and promoting team cohesion
  • Effectively manages conflicts as they arise
  • Works well with people of diverse personalities, learning styles and life experiences

Overall - Distinguished Staff

The overall distinguished staff award recognizes a staff member who embodies the characteristics and exhibits the qualifications from each of the four category awards: Innovation and Impact; Service, Dedication & Commitment; Spirit of Coles; and Teamwork and Leadership.

This award will be presented to an individual who, in addition to performing all their normal job duties with excellence, also demonstrates exceptional initiative in contributing to the Coles College of Business community.

Nominations should include supporting examples from each of the four category awards and any additional information that should be considered when selecting a winner.
