Mentoring Undergraduate Researchers at KSU

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is pleased to announce the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, which is given to a KSU faculty or staff member who exhibits sustained exceptional mentoring of undergraduate researchers at KSU.

  • Any faculty or staff member who has worked at KSU for a minimum of 3 years, during which they have a demonstrated track record of mentoring undergraduate researchers, is eligible to apply.
  • The recipient will receive $2,000 that can be used either this or next fiscal year. Funds must be utilized in a way that supports the recipient's research, and are subject to respective deadlines as stated by the Office of Undergraduate Research, which take into consideration Fiscal Services' year-end deadline dates.

    Past award recipients have used the funds on things such as supplies, equipment, conference registration/travel, and/or summer salary.

  • All submissions were due by Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST.
  • Required documents:

    • Cover page with the following information:
      • First and Last Name
      • Department
      • Year Started at KSU
    • Statement of interest (3 pages max)
      • Past experiences mentoring undergraduate researchers at KSU (e.g., number of students, number of years mentoring students)
      • Examples of how you have supported undergraduate researchers (e.g., conference presentations, publications, student success after graduation)
      • Examples of how your mentoring supports diverse students or diverse content
      • Examples of how you have exceeded expectations as a mentor – (what makes you uniquely qualified for this award?)
    • Current curriculum vita (10 pages max) highlighting work with undergraduate researchers
    • Supporting letters (up to 3) from current/former students or colleagues in a position to speak to the individual’s mentoring abilities

    Submissions that do not adhere to the requirements will not be reviewed.

  • The award will be announced after the Spring Symposium of Student Scholars in April.

    The winner of this award agrees to be featured in any future news stories as deemed appropriate by OUR. The winner also agrees to serve on the review panel for any future funding opportunities for OUR.
