Dr. Joyce E. King is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair for Urban Teaching, Learning and Leadership at Georgia State University, where she is also affiliated with the Africana Studies Department, the Women’s and Gender Studies Institute, and the Urban Studies Institute. She was Director of Teacher Education at Santa Clara University; she served on California’s state Curriculum Commission and the National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) and she is a past-president of the American Educational Research Association and an elected member of the National Academy of Education. As President of the Academy for Diaspora Literacy, Inc., she founded the Guardians of Heritage youth civic leadership collaborative. She is a recipient of many academic honors and her award-winning scholarship includes 9 books, more than 80 publications and her concepts of “dysconscious racism” and “heritage knowledge” continue to influence research and practice in education and sociology in the U.S. and in other countries.
