Leadership Roles for Band Members

The Marching Owls Athletic Band offers a range of leadership opportunities for members to grow and contribute to the success of the program. Roles like Drum Major, Section Leader, Uniform Manager, Music Librarian, and Truck/Equipment Crew allow students to develop skills in areas such as music direction, team coordination, and logistical management.

Each position plays an essential role in supporting the band, with applications and auditions available to dedicated members who have participated in the Marching Owls for at least one season.

  • The Drum Major of “The Marching Owls” is the premier position of leadership for our program.  The person who receives the honor of being Drum Major is one that is a servant leader.  The position must lead by example, be the iconic representative of the student membership, and be an upstanding citizen. Collegiate Drum Majors are a small pool of people nationally for a reason.  They must have integrity on and off the field, show character in and out of the classroom, and have the best interest of the program in mind at all times.  Being the Drum Major of “The Marching Owls” is a 24/7 position; once you become the Drum Major, you will always be in a position where you are looked at as such.

    The role of “The Marching Owls” Drum Major is to assist with music and marching rehearsals, communicate with the membership regarding pep band needs, conduct in the stands and on the field for halftime, perform during pregame, and be a liaison between the director and the membership.  The Drum Major will also assist with instruction at band camp and throughout the season.  The Drum Major does not need to major in music to be in the position.  They simply need to be a good musician and have the ability to conduct.

    It is a tremendously rewarding position that will no doubt be a highlight of ones college career.

    The Drum Major auditions will occur at the end of the fall season. Drum Major applicants are required to have marched in “The Marching Owls” for a minimum of 1 year.

  • Each section in the program has Section Leaders to help run the music rehearsal and marching rehearsal.  These positions are vital to the success of the program, especially when dealing with complex aspects such as attendance and communication with a group this size.  The Section Leaders are also the population of members who provide music and visual examples to the ensemble by always being prepared with their drill and music.

    For a 300-member band, there will be a need for several section leaders in each section.  Therefore, we will have several openings for each section that students may apply and audition for.  Sections that are larger, i.e. Trumpets, might have 3-4 Section Leaders, where Baritones might have 1-2.   The Section Leader ratio to membership will be appropriate to the section size.

    The role of the Section Leader will be to assist with attendance every day, work with the Drum Major on securing members for pep bands, assist with teaching at band camp, serve as the music and visual examples for the rest of the ensemble, run sectionals during band, listen to music playoffs at rehearsal, and other similar duties.

    The Section Leader auditions will occur in the spring semester and require applicants to have marched in “The Marching Owls” for a minimum of 1 year.

  • The Uniform Manager is a member in the program who directs and coordinates all aspects of uniform disbursement, collection, and upkeep.  The position is one that is crucial to the success of our performances and our public perception.  There are many parts and pieces to uniforms that must be kept up with – jackets, pants, hats, plumes, buttons, chains, etc. – and the Uniform Manager is the manager of these components, making this position an essential part of the program.

    The role of the Uniform Manager is to assign uniforms, keep a detailed list of each uniform piece that members have, help organize the uniform storage, organize and coordinate a uniform crew to assist this person, make uniform alterations as needed for the membership, and repair parts throughout the season.

    The Uniform Manager interviews and auditions will occur in the spring semester and require applicants to have marched in “The Marching Owls” for a minimum of 1 year.

  • The music librarians are members in the program that coordinate all aspects of music disbursement and music library upkeep. The role of the librarians is to organize music, catalogue music, file music, keep order in the music library, and keep the library area clean and neat. The librarians will copy music for the entire band, distribute music to the members, and keep computerized records up-to-date. Librarians will also update directors upon request of library standing, collect music, and file materials no longer needed. “The Marching Owls” will perform a pre game show, stands tunes, and multiple halftime shows per season. As such, the music librarians are key to the musical success of the program.

    The Music Librarian interviews and auditions will occur in the spring semester and require applicants to have marched in “The Marching Owls” for a minimum of 1 year.

  • The Truck/Equipment Crew are full performing members of “The Marching Owls.” They are responsible for the daily organization of rehearsal materials and equipment. They are involved in transporting equipment, trip organization, and field maintenance. Members of this group will guide and supervise Rehearsal Techs during the season. Crew members are not responsible for individual equipment of each member in the group, but will manage special equipment and ensure proper storage of all marching band equipment and facilities. They are also responsible for setting up and breaking down rooms for indoor rehearsals. A truck/equipment crew is essential for a 300-member band to function, and these members play a vital role in the success of “The Marching Owls.”

    The Truck/Equipment Crew interviews and auditions will occur in the spring semester and require applicants to have marched in “The Marching Owls” for a minimum of 1 year.
