Scholar Insurance
As an exchange visitor sponsor, KSU is required to ensure that J-1 exchange visitors and their J-2 dependent family members have appropriate health insurance coverage during their stay in the U.S.
The minimum requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of State are:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
- Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
- A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
J-1 exchange scholars considered a benefitted employee of Kennesaw State University may be enrolled in an insurance plan through the university, provided it meets the requirements above. Available plans can be found on the University System of Georgia's benefits website. Please note not all plans on the website meet the J visa requirements. Additionally, the university's insurance plans will not be effective immediately upon arrival in the U.S. Therefore, scholars should plan to purchase insurance for the interim period so that they always have insurance coverage in the U.S.
Scholars, professors, specialists, and student interns may also purchase insurance from an insurance company through the assistance of Kennesaw State University. Please contact the ISSS below for information on the plans.
