“MEGA + MICRO: Invention at the Extremes in Canadian Architecture Since 2000”  

Sweeping from Atlantic to Pacific to the Arctic Oceans, this panoramic talk surveys the best designs completed in Canada since 2000, including works by James Cheng, Arthur Erickson, Shim + Sutcliffe, Patkaus, 5468796, Hariri-Pontarini and others.  Vancouver-based architecture critic Trevor Boddy argues Canada’s most innovative and original work is either megastructure—massive high-density, often high-rise complexes downtown—and at the other end of the scale spectrum, artfully-composed residences, and cultural buildings in harmony with their natural settings.  The talk is an update of an essay for the A/V Madrid book Atlas Americas: Architectures of the 21st century, which was premiated for the Pierre Vago Prize for “Best Architectural Criticism Published Worldwide” at the UIA Tokyo World Architecture Congress.
