ArtsKSU adds overnight option for high school students and rising college freshmen
Kennesaw State University College of the Arts is offering high school students and rising college freshmen an opportunity to experience the arts on a collegiate level this summer. Students may choose from acting, dance, design tech, music, musical theatre, or visual arts, including a new fashion and textile intensive. The Summer Arts Intensives will be offered June 5-9, except for two half-day programs, May 31-June 2, in the Bailey School of Music.
For the first time, students in many intensives will have the option of staying in a residence hall on the Kennesaw campus. Students are encouraged to register early as space is limited, especially for the overnight option; registration opens Dec. 20, 2022.
Most intensives will be offered June 5-9, from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. and include lunch for only $295. The overnight option includes the day intensive and spending the night in one of the residence halls on the Kennesaw campus; the price is $580 (inclusive) for the week and includes all meals. The two half-day programs for Bailey School of Music run May 31-June 2 for $125 each.
Harrison Long, Interim Dean of the College of the Arts said, “ArtsKSU is excited to welcome aspiring young artists to experience a week of intense, in-person instruction from our faculty. We are particularly thrilled to add the overnight option for students who want to know what it’s like to attend KSU, major in the arts, and live on campus.”
Dance, Theatre, and Music will all offer both day and overnight options on select intensives, while the School of Art and Design is currently offering daytime intensives only.
The School of Art and Design, while not offering an overnight option, is bringing back its popular lineup of art-centric classes, plus new this year is a textile design intensive for students interested in fashion. All Art and Design intensives will be held on the KSU Marietta campus. Animation or comics fans may want to attend Visual Storytelling in Comics and Sequential Art, or perhaps 3D Digital Modeling and Character Development or Original 2D Character Design.
In Textile Design, students will work through multiple units that include fashion illustration, basic patternmaking and sewing construction. Students will learn how to create and curate successful colorways, materials, and garment studies, assisting with development as an artist and/or designer.
Theatre buffs may choose from Acting, Musical Theatre, or Design and Technology on the Kennesaw campus from the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies. Acting centers on the actor's approach to auditioning, including core acting work, technique, and professional insights into casting processes. Musical Theatre will feature acting, dance, and vocal skills workshops led by KSU faculty and local professionals. The Theatre Design and Technology Intensive will cover different aspects of working backstage, including scenic, costume, lighting, props, and sound.
Also on the Kennesaw campus, dancers will experience a myriad of dance classes, such as modern, ballet, African, jazz, choreography, and dance history, all led by KSU Department of Dance faculty, culminating in a performance at the end of the week. The popular Summer Dance Intensive will fill up quickly, so please register early.
Music students will want to turn up the volume when they learn that the Bailey School of Music has expanded its offerings this year on the Kennesaw campus. Intensives this year include Choral/Voice, Percussion, Strings, and Trumpet. Choral/Voice and Strings intensives are full days with an option for overnight, while Percussion and Trumpet intensives are half days for three days only.
Attendance at all the intensives is limited—especially the overnight option—so interested students should register as early as possible. Registration goes live Dec. 20, 2022. Learn more about the College of the Arts.
